In
the late
1800's, Tumbleweeds (Russian thistle), an oval shaped annual was
introduced
into the western United States by ship buried in imported grain from
Russia
and Siberia. Russian thistle belongs to the
goosefoot family and some vegetables like beets, goosefoot and spinach! Tumbleweeds
are prolific seeders and
seed germination is quickly established after a brief rainy
season. A single plant may produce 20,000 to 50,000 seeds dispersing
them as they are
scattered by the wind across the landscape.
Here in the
Southwest snow does not last long enough to make a decent snowman, so
we do the next best thing! One
interesting use for this dried plant in regions of the American
Southwest is for making a "NEW MEXICO SNOWMAN" at Christmas time. Three
proportionally sized tumbleweeds (small, medium, large) are used to
make the head,
lower and main body of a "snowman." Once your snowman is secured
together spray paint white and
decorate. We add Christmas lights which assists the snowman
to stay together.
Allow me to introduce you to the New
Mexico
Snowman!
"Thank you, thank you very much!"
